Aloha!

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost the end of February already! We had a very exciting and exhausting four days at this year’s NAMM show in Anaheim. I attended two seminars on the new CITES requirements for rosewood. The good news is that you can freely transport any rosewood (except Brazilian) without a permit as long as the rosewood components are less than 10 Kg and not for resale. As far as enforcement of the new permit requirements, some countries are stricter than others, Japan being one of them.

One of the most exciting things about attending NAMM is previewing some of the new products and ones that are currently available, but we haven’t tried. In addition to new books, we’ve added Fishman pickups, NUX (very affordable, but great sounding amps), and also ordered the new L.R. Baggs Synapse personal PA system. We also brought home some new Islander models. After returning home, we took a day off and took a drive up to the Blackbird shop in San Francisco. After a very interesting tour, we did place an order, so we should be receiving our first ukuleles from them in April.

Jake Shimabukuro introduced his new book Jake Shimabukuro Teaches Ukulele Lessons at NAMM. Learn notes, chords, songs and playing techniques from the master of modern ukulele! The book starts off with the basics (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star), but progresses to one of his most recognizable songs, While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Each book comes with its own unique code to access videos of Jake teaching the songs in the book.

A big mahalo to all those who attended Herb Ohta Jr’s workshop and concert in January. We had a great turnout for both the workshop and concert. In addition to performing for the seniors and Lotus pre-school children Herb generously donated ALL of the proceeds from the workshop and concert to Yu-Ai Kai Senior Center.

We will be closing at 2:00 PM on Saturday, Feb 25 to attend a fund raiser in Sacramento. Sorry for any inconvenience. Best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2017!
Mahalo,
Smiley and Janet
